Abstract
Exhibition on the 100th Anniversary of the Outbreak of World War I at the Matija Čop Primary School Kranj
In 2014, mankind commemorated the centennial of the outbreak of World War I, which left its mark on the entire 20th century, the most violent century in human history. At the Matija Čop Primary School Kranj we commemorated the memory of the bloody slaughter by setting up an exhibition on the four years of horrors. We wished to point out that peace is not a value to be taken for granted or one for which we do not have to fight. Helping us to write the story about the great, pointless slaughter were the employees and pupils, and the external collaborators of the Museum of Gorenjska and members of the Triglav Cultural and Historical Society. The pupils acted as genuine museum guides and led other pupils through the exhibition during lessons. By using questions prepared in advance, they established intercommunication, built a culture of dialogue and cooperative learning. In the afternoon hours they led the parents and grandparents of pupils and other visitors through the exhibition. We wished to remind the children and teenagers who are excited about combat computer games and destructive weapons of the thought of Erasmus of Rotterdam: »War is sweet to them that know it not.«
