Abstract

Observing Tree Species Using Tablet Computers in Year 1

Children must be properly encouraged to research and get to know their immediate surroundings. Some studies have reported that the children of today know little about different trees and their leaves. To determine the effectiveness of independent use of a tablet computer and of the contents prepared in the web application CSOE Mission, an original interactive guide was preparedentitled “Raziskovanje drevesnih listov v okolici šole” [Researching Tree Leaves in School Surroundings], which was tested on Year 1 pupils in primary school. The results have shown that the pupils, albeit Year 1 pupils, were sufficiently independent and successful, and that they newly discovered hornbeam, which grows in the immediate vicinity of the school and with which the pupils were previously unfamiliar. The use of sensibly prepared contents, suitable for the children’s stage of development, in the easy-to-use web application CSOE Mission could replace the use of worksheets, encourage children to be more independent when researching their immediate surroundings, and could have the desired impact on the advancement of knowledge.
