Abstract
Aidan Chambers and His Approach to Reading
The education system develops the abilities needed to acquire reading skills, but it too often fails to motivate young readers, who do not receive pleasure from reading and do not retain reading habits for life. This paper presents Chambers’ approach to discussing a text that has been read. The discussion is only verbal and does not require readers to fill out questionnaires, or prepare written summaries and seminar papers. It is not a rigid list of rules, but a suggestion for teaching young readers to foster trust in their own abilities, to express their ideas, and to listen to their peers when discussing books. The theoretical presentation is followed by a description of this approach from a practical perspective, as experienced in class.
