Abstract
Interdisciplinary Nature of a Picture Book: Possibilities for a Cross-Curricular Discussion of a Picture Book during Slovenian Language and Art Lessons
The article presents a cross-curricular link between Slovenian Language and Art lessons at the primary level. A picture book is a special type of book which contains several modes or multimodality (at least two communication modes: text and illustration). The article discusses the original picture book by Leo Lionni Little Blue and Little Yellow (first published in 1959 and published in the Slovenian language in 2015) which is undoubtedly a masterpiece of picture book production. The discussion begins by presenting the basic facts about picture books, followed by a presentation of the selected picture book: the paratext, the formal relationship between text and illustration, an analysis of the text and illustrations, the relationship between the content of the text and illustrations, and a cross-curricular link. The picture book was linked to the building blocks of reading literacy, particularly with the 3rd building block, i.e. understanding the concept of the reading material; last but not least, reading a picture book provides good motivation for reading, reading fluently, reading with comprehension and reacting to the text.
